I just recently returned from my trip to London. This book proved to be helpful for us - since our stay in London was very quick. We really only had a couple of free days in London, and so we capitalized on the walking tours, and the information that was provided on how to get tickets to the musicals all proved to be very accurate and very helpful.

"Get the most out of every day and every dollar" is quoted on the back of Rick Steves' London 2011 book and this is an accurate summary for this guide. Included are self-guided tours to the more popular tourist sights in London but one also learns where "the locals go for lunch and how to avoid mobs" at the most popular sights including the London Eye and the Changing of the Guard. An important factor for any tourist: how to get around by bus and on the Tube (subway). Good value hotels, restaurants and pubs are described which is important to know especially with the current low-value dollar exchange! I especially appreciated the Appendices sections: Tourist Information; Communicating (how to use mobile phones, call to other countries, useful help numbers,the British accent, Public Transit routes, the Internet, Mail); Resources (other helpful books to borrow/purchase, podcasts, recommended movies); Holidays and Festivals; Conversions and Climate (Interesting tips include: "When counting with fingers, start with your thumb. If you hold up your first finger to request one item, you'll probably get two."); Essential Packing List; Hotel Reservation Form; and the British-Yankee Vocabulary section (I would buy this book just for this section alone! HINT: Never say you are wearing a "fanny pac"! Look THAT one up to save a lot of embarassment!) The book also contains an albeit small but nicely summarized English History and Contemporary Politics section.

An independent pre-Christmas trip to London (Dec 8-13, 2010) was extremely enhanced through "Rick Steves' London 2011" both through pre-trip planning and on-trip reading. The guidelines for visiting the National Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and the British Museum were extremely helpful. These museums are so large, that the Steves' focus assists in seeing the best artwork and historical images within a two hour visit to each museum. Rick's suggestion of an Oyster Card for Underground Tube travel was efficient and effective. The Underground and City Maps at the opening of the book were excellent as well as the hand-drawn maps for walking tours of areas of London. "Rick Steves London 2011" actually enhanced the satisfaction of my six-day trip to London.

This is a beautiful book with some great photography about some of the "unknown" places in Mexico. It goes beyond the Cancun and Cabo San Lucas and transports you to another side of Mexico that few people know. Small, charming villages that still preserve the colonial history and the traditions that make them special and makes you evoke a period in history long gone. The descriptions are short and I will have love it if there was a more detailed map of where these places are located and how to reach them.

While I'm still glad that I purchased this book, since I did learn about a number of attractive small towns that do not turn up in the guide books, prospective customers should be warned that many of these 101 listings are not small towns. Perhaps even less that half? A great number of them are religious buildings from the colonial period: churches, convents, monasteries, etc. And many of them are pre-Colombian sites-- including such classic places as Monte Alban, Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan. It may be that *all* the familiar pre-Colombian sites are listed in here! And then you have cities, such as Guanajuato and Campeche. The most gratuitous listing is Cozumel, the busiest cruise-ship harbor in all Mexico. These may be worthy destinations (and the listing of the religious buildings is certainly useful), but they're not small towns. So, if you're especially keen on the small town experience in Mexico, you will be short changed.

I haven't seen the other books on this series, on France and Italy, but I'll wager that they are truly focused on small towns.

One Hundred & One Beautiful Small Towns in Mexico

What a fantastic resource for discovering the hidden gems of Mexico. We're planning a trip south, where the dollar will still deliver good value, and are thrilled that we found this book. It's packed with beautiful photographs, informative summaries, a selection of hotel and restaurant recommendations in each location and a regional index to help the reader/traveler organize and plan an itinerary. It covers the places we're all familiar with, but this book also reveals a whole new Mexico that you don't hear much about from the travel websites and agents.
It's not the sort of book you take with you. It's one you want to have before you plan. Who knew about the turquoise lagoons of Bacalar? Or the "dance of the fliers" in Papantla? If you're looking for an exciting and exotic cultural adventure or just wanting to know more about Mexico, get this book!

"Hotel", with its lavish sets, believable characters, and well-constructed plot, is one of the better movies I've seen this year. Always busy, always hosting important people, this hotel reminds me of the Waldorf-Astoria in New York for its grandness and the Peabody in Memphis for its homeliness. Karl's performance stole the show, while Rod's role and character were the most believable. To add a cherry on top (no pun intended), one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen stars as a used and abused French woman. Her performance was exquisite as well. And the sad ending makes you dread the real-estate business. SEE THIS MOVIE! (By the way, the score really wasn't that bad at all.)

I love this movie! It's a wonderful escape back to an era when hospitality was in and everyone not only knew how, but were expected to "dress" (it makes me want to buy white gloves and hats just to do lunch).

Catherine Spaak and Merle Oberon are luminous in Edith Head gowns, although Catherine's posture is noticably askew (her mother should've reminded her to sit up straight). Rod Taylor's performance is marvelous, but somewhat restrained for his typical style. However, no one does a love scene with more tenderness than Rod, so it's small wonder Spaak would dump McCarthy's character for Taylor's regardless of money!

Melvyn Douglas is at his best as the curmudgeon hotelier (stroke and all), Kevin McCarthy is the takeover louse you love to hate and Karl Malden almost steals the entire movie as the hotel thief who just can't make a killing. There are also delightful performances by bit players throughout the movie; McCarthy's "oily" sychophantic male secretary and the hotel staff, especially the errant bell captain who's on the take.

The background music is sometimes annoyingly loud (the editors should have caught that!), but Carmen MacRae's all too brief appearances as the hotel saloon singer make up for any soundtrack problems. Carmen could "turn a lyric" as well as Ella!

With all of the sub-plots, you just can't wait to see what happens next and of course, what's not to love about a mostly happy ending.

My only complaint is the common mistake of mispronouncing New Orleans. If you've spent any time there, you already know it's pronounced New "Or-luhnz" not New "Or-leeeens". LOL

Hotel...Two Hours of Distilled Style, March 27, 2000

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the score to this movie described as "dreadful"! I turned on this movie shortly after it started, and probably would have turned it off if the wonderful score hadn't grabbed my attention. The music and the Technicolor beauty drew me in, and the complexly woven plot kept me watching intently, rather than just listening to the music! And the end was great; I thought it was triumphant; very uplifting! If you want to watch two hours of distilled style, a portrait of a bygone era when men still wore suits and hats, when style and luxury hadn't lost out to cheap plastic imitations, get this movie!

The book was well-written, but repetitive. The same city sites came up in almost every chapter. The restaurants reviewed were mostly tourist traps. The food was decent, but overpriced. Do not go out of your way to visit the Varsity. While the food was inexpensive, it was sub-par. We did not drive, but used the MARTA system. The sites were often no where NEAR the MARTA stop listed in the guide book. More emphasis needs to be placed on the fact that downtown Atlanta is dangerous after dark, and there is not much to do in the evenings (once the few attractions close).
